Core syllabus

 

Regional science is a field of the social sciences with powerful influence from economic science, concerned with analytical approaches to problems that are specifically urban, rural, or regional. In this framework, the main objective of this course is the understanding of the nature of the regional science and the basic used terms and theoretical approaches within the field of regional science. This course examines also the spatial dimension of economic activities: organisation of space, spatial effects on economic behaviour, location decisions, at theoretical and empirical level. Finally, it introduces the students to the basic framework of the Regional Policy at European and national level.

 

 

Content

 

The topics covered are likely to include some of the following:

 

Spatial Economics and Regional Science-Introduction. Basic terms in spatial analysis (space-dimensions of space, region, micro-region, macro-region etc). Regional problem: forms, causes, theories. Economic region: classification systems, methods of setting limits, distinctions between regions, administrative region. Determinants of activities location, basic theories and empirical researches. Interdisciplinary concern of spatial problems and the state’s programming of actions. Regional economic policy: objectives and means, developmental strategy, Greek and European Union regional policy.

Assessment


The assessment method of the course is the following:


A. WRITTEN EXAMINATIONS (50% OF THE FINAL DEGREE). Students expected to participate in the written examinations at the end of the semester (January – February examination period), answering in a few questions (in English language), regarding the topics of the course, according to the mentioned pages of the above reading texts (Recommended reading).


B. ESSAY (50% OF THE FINAL DEGREE) Students will be expected to write a 2,500-3,000 word (10 pages maximum) essay, during the course of the semester to be marked by the seminar teacher and according to the given bibliography.



Essay time-schedule: The essay will be completed after the “Christmas” holidays.


Teaching - Seminars Students expected to attend the weekly seminars during the course. The main purpose of these seminars is the discussion with the seminar teacher about the progress of the essays and in general about the covered topics of the course.
