Core syllabus and main topics

 

The main objective of this course is the understanding of the basic theoretical and methodological framework of the transportation economic analysis and policy.

 

In this framework, the course consists of two teaching modules.

 

The first one analyses the transportation economics (taught by Dr Kostas Bithas). The main topics of transportation economics include: regulation, pricing, economic stimulus, demand, production, externalities, financing, expenditures, cost-benefit analysis.

 

The second module covers the transportation policy issues (taught by Dr Manolis Christofakis). It introduces the students to the basic framework of the transportation policy at European and national level. The topics covered are likely to include: transportation systems – general, present situation of the national transportation network, transport policy in Greece and EU, regional development and transport policy at national and European level, methodological issues of the spatial dimensions of transport policy, state’s programming of actions regarding transportation projects.

Assessment


The assessment method of the course consists of two essays, as following:


1. ESSAY (50% OF THE FINAL DEGREE) ON A SPECIAL THEME REGARDING THE TRANSPORTATION ECONOMICS Students will be expected to write a 2,500 word (6 pages maximum) essay, during the course of the semester to be marked by the seminar teacher and according to the given bibliography. Essay time-schedule: The essay will be completed after the “Christmas” holidays.


2. Teaching – Discussion Seminars


All students are expected to attend some seminars during the course. The main purpose of these seminars is the discussion with the seminar teachers about the progress of the essays and in general about the covered topics of the course.
